Subway Restaurants in Northwest Missouri

Project Background and Priorities

The St. Joseph owners of a successful multi-store Subway franchise selected GGA to develop a new “flagship” prototype for planned facility upgrades or replacements at their multiple locations.

GGA worked with both the local owner and national franchise to select features, materials, and colors that would establish visual ties as part of an overall retail identity for Subway locations across Northwest Missouri.

At a site along St. Joseph’s busy Belt Highway, GGA designed the first of several projects for this owner with a new freestanding restaurant.

The exterior featured an arched entrance and a black and olive color palette. This palette is reminiscent of Tuscan architecture and coordinated with Subway’s attractive corporate interior decor.

GGA designed an administrative center at the site’s rear to complement the new restaurant and provide a unified complex. The administrative center contained corporate offices, conference facilities and storage.

This provided the local Subway owner with a new central location from which to continue its regional expansion.

Subway enjoyed a popular, long-established location in an older 2-story midtown storefront with historic charm and features. Rather than replace the restaurant with a new facility, GGA designed a renovation which included opening covered windows, exposing brick walls, and restoring the original storefront, cornice, and trim. Re-creating the arcade signage appropriate to buildings in older St. Joseph retail districts added authenticity to the restored façade.

The second floor, still laid out as abandoned apartments, was gutted and renovated with new windows, tile floors, exposed brick walls and pressed metal ceilings. This portion of the building had been unused for decades and now provides additional restaurant seating for lunchtime overflow and banquet functions.

Goldberg Group Architects continued the regional Subway expansion with a second new, freestanding building along the Belt Highway in St. Joseph, MO. This Subway used design elements from the previous two buildings while creating a unique personality for this location, with the first double window drive-thru for a Subway anywhere in the nation.
