Muskegon County Juvenile Transition Center
Muskegon, MI
PROJECT PRIORITIES As one part of their two-project Detention initiative, Muskegon County badly needed to replace its obsolete 21-Bed Juvenile Detention Center with a larger, modern Treatment facility;
SOLUTION A new 32-bed JTC incorporated extensive program space within a secure residential environment. GGA developed four 8-bed residential pods. Each pod contained single and double occupancy bedrooms off a common living area. Every pod opens onto a multi-purpose common space for educational or recreational activities. The Muskegon Juvenile Treatment Center is furnished with secure college-style furniture to strengthen a more residential image for its juvenile residents.
Living units are over-sized under Michigan Juvenile Standards, to allow extra capacity of up to 48-beds within the proposed footprint; either of two housing pods can be added to the central support facility.
