Jail dedication begins new era for sheriff’s office

PAOLA — Miami County commissioners handed the keys of the new detention center over to Sheriff Frank Kelly during a dedication ceremony Friday morning, signifying the beginning of a new era for the sheriff’s office.

“Thank you, from our staff to the citizens of Miami County,” Kelly said. “This facility is our new home.”

The new Miami County Detention Center is located at 209 S. Pearl St. next to the Miami County Administration Building and across the street from the Miami County Courthouse and current sheriff’s office and jail in Paola.

The detention center has taken about a year longer to complete than originally planned. When county leaders officially broke ground on the project in December 2014, it was estimated to be complete and ready for a ribbon cutting in the late summer or early fall of 2016.

Goldberg Group Architects designed the three-level detention facility, and construction manager Loyd Builders of Ottawa and its subcontractors handled the construction. The building was constructed on the site of the former parking lot on the south side of the Miami County Administration Building.
