SEWARD COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER
In need of additional jail beds, Seward County had completed three different studies and seen two failed bond issue attempts since 2002. The County turned to GGA to develop a real alternative to the previous project concepts which had failed to satisfy the community.
County commissioners wanted to demonstrate to the taxpayers that they had listened to their concerns by increasing the scope of the project without increasing the cost. GGA’s task was to develop viable options for a comprehensive judicial center project, not just a law enforcement center as previously planned. Working closely with County and Judicial officials, as well as the Sheriff’s Department, GGA developed an option which maintained the location just a block from the County Courthouse. This option avoided an adverse impact on the thriving business environment surrounding Seward’s historic courthouse square.
Seward’s new Justice Center, now under construction, will contain a 60-bed jail, Sheriff’s Department, Courts and County offices. Construction is phased for new construction followed by renovation of the existing Courthouse.
